What is a Hypodermic Syringe?

A hypodermic syringe is a medical device used to inject substances into the body or withdraw fluids from it. The term comes from Greek: hypo- (“under”) and derma (“skin”). It is most commonly associated with injections, such as vaccinations, insulin administration, or other medications.

Key Parts of a Hypodermic Syringe

A standard syringe consists of four main components:

  1. Barrel: The cylindrical chamber that holds the liquid. It is made of transparent plastic (or glass for some special uses) and has graduated markings (scale) to measure the volume of medication.

  2. Plunger: A rod that fits snugly inside the barrel. Pushing it forces the liquid out through the needle. Pulling it back creates a vacuum to draw fluid in (aspiration).

  3. Piston (or Rubber Tip): The end of the plunger that creates an airtight seal against the inside of the barrel.

  4. Needle: A hollow, sharp, stainless steel tube that pierces the skin. It consists of:

    • Hub: The plastic part that screws or locks onto the tip of the barrel.

    • Shaft: The long, thin metal tube.

    • Bevelled Point: The sharp, slanted tip that allows for a clean puncture.

Modern medical syringes are almost always single-use, sterile, and disposable to prevent the spread of infections.
